The New Teacher Role for Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse Ronan, who was most recently seen with Paul Mescal in the science fiction thriller Foe starring Garth Davis, is now pursuing a career in education. She’ll play a teacher dealing with a very disruptive student in a new satirical film, which is Swedish writer/director Jonatan Etzler’s first English-language feature. One of the films whose distribution rights are currently up for grabs at this year’s AFM market is Bad Apples.

In Jess O’Kane’s changes of Rasmus Lindgren’s first novel, De Oönskade, for the screen, Ronan plays Maria, a primary school teacher who tries her hardest to inspire her class of ten-year-olds but is thwarted by one rowdy and disruptive student.

She makes a string of poor choices that result in her unintentionally taking this “bad apple” into her home and locking her up, all because her career is in jeopardy and the child’s behaviour is out of control. Maria makes a valiant effort to turn things around, but when the class begins to thrive and the teachers and parents are delighted with the progress, she finds herself in a difficult situation.

“We have been following with much excitement the development of this brilliant screenplay with one of the most interesting directors to be emerging from Scandinavia,” says Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films, which is producing the movie. Saoirse Ronan has such a juicy part here, and she’ll bring this unique role’s drama, comedy, and brutal tension to life.”

The film is scheduled to be shot in the upcoming spring. Ronan, meanwhile, will next be seen in The Outrun, a drama about addiction, and Steve McQueen’s Blitz.
